Hemant Soren, born on August 10, 1975, in Nemra village, Ramgarh district, Jharkhand, has established himself as a preeminent political figure in Jharkhand. His tenure as Chief Minister, marked by four terms in office, reflects his impact on the state’s governance and his enduring presence in the political sphere.

On his 50th birthday, August 10, 2025, Hemant Soren received birthday wishes from across the political spectrum, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other prominent national figures. His contributions were celebrated by the Chief Ministers of other states, as well as leaders from various political parties in Jharkhand, all acknowledging his achievements and wishing him future success.

Prior to his birthday celebration, Hemant Soren experienced a personal loss with the passing of his father, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren, on August 4, 2025. In the aftermath, Hemant oversaw the traditional funeral rites and observed local customs in his ancestral village in Ramgarh, honoring his father’s memory.

Initially, Hemant had aspirations of becoming an engineer and pursued his education at Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra (BIT Mesra), Ranchi, following his intermediate studies. However, he chose a career in politics before completing his engineering degree.

His entry into politics was spurred by the election losses of his parents, Shibu Soren and Rupi Soren, in 1998 and 1999, which weakened the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Hemant actively worked to strengthen the party, particularly in the Santhal Pargana region. His efforts eventually led to his father, Shibu Soren, securing the Dumka Lok Sabha seat in 2002, 2004, and 2009.

Hemant’s own political career began in 2005 when he contested the Dumka Assembly seat, though he was defeated by Stephen Marandi. Undeterred, he continued his work at the grassroots level and achieved success in 2009 when he was elected as a Rajya Sabha MP.

In late 2009, he contested the Assembly elections from the Dumka seat, winning and subsequently resigning from the Rajya Sabha.

In 2010, Hemant Soren became Deputy Chief Minister under the leadership of Arjun Munda. He was first sworn in as Chief Minister of Jharkhand in 2013, and later, he took the oath again on December 29, 2019. Legal challenges emerged on December 31, 2023, leading to his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate in a land scam case. After his release from jail, he was sworn in as Chief Minister for the third time on July 4, 2024.

In the November 2024 Assembly elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, under Hemant’s leadership, secured the most seats with 34, while the Mahagathbandhan government, led by him, won a total of 56 seats, securing a strong majority. On November 28, 2024, Hemant Soren was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Jharkhand for the fourth time.

On April 15, 2025, at the 13th Central General Convention of the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha, Hemant Soren was elected as the party’s central president, succeeding his father, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren. Now, Hemant shoulders the responsibility of upholding his father’s political legacy and fulfilling the aspirations of the 35 million people of Jharkhand.
