Bangladesh is experiencing a period of heightened tension as a special tribunal prepares to announce its verdict against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina within the next 24 hours. The interim government, under Muhammad Yunus, has reportedly requested the death penalty for the 78-year-old political figure, citing alleged crimes against humanity committed during last year’s significant anti-government protests. National security forces have been placed on high alert across Bangladesh, with preparations underway to manage any potential public unrest or instability that may arise from the tribunal’s decision. The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT-BD) will deliver its judgment regarding Hasina and other former officials, including ex-Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal and former IGP Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun. Charges include murder and torture, linked to the crackdown on the July 2023 student uprising, which ultimately led to the collapse of the Awami League government. Hasina and Kamal are being tried in absentia, as they are considered fugitives, with Hasina believed to be in India. Al-Mamun has reportedly become an approver in the case. The prosecution is pushing for the death penalty for Hasina, identifying her as the prime instigator of the violent suppression. Supporters of the former Prime Minister contend that these legal actions are politically motivated. India’s response to an extradition request for Hasina is still pending. The country stands at a critical juncture, awaiting a verdict that could significantly impact its future political landscape and regional relations.
