A horrific fire has swept through a Hong Kong housing development, leaving 44 people dead and hundreds of residents missing. Emergency crews are still working to combat the intense flames and search for survivors trapped on elevated floors. Authorities have announced the arrest of three individuals connected to the incident: two directors from a company and a construction consultant. They face accusations of gross negligence, stemming from the discovery of highly flammable polystyrene boards used to cover windows, which facilitated the fire’s rapid spread. Investigations are also examining whether other construction supplies, including tarps and plastic coverings, met the required safety standards. The fire significantly impacted seven of the complex’s eight towers, many housing elderly tenants, and burned for approximately 16 hours. Fire services confirmed the use of these inflammable panels as a major contributor to the speed of the blaze. The Chief Executive of Hong Kong has committed to a rigorous review of building fire safety protocols and promised to pursue legal action against those responsible for this devastating event.
