Gujarat’s battle against stray cattle is getting a high-tech upgrade. Ahmedabad, plagued by roaming cows causing traffic snarls and deadly crashes, is set to deploy an AI system that identifies animals using their unique facial biometrics.

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation’s upcoming pilot project, backed by GIFT City’s AI hub, promises to overhaul stray animal management. Over 1.1 lakh cows sport RFID tags and microchips, monitored via 130 CCTV spots—but current manual identification lags behind the crisis.

The new AI solution, developed via deep learning, plugs directly into live CCTV streams. It meticulously examines each cow’s nose structure—a biometric gold standard akin to fingerprints—alongside eyes, contours, scars, and lesions. Matches to the owner database happen in seconds, alerting teams instantly.

This shift from manpower-heavy processes to automated precision could transform road safety. Accidents drop, traffic eases, and public trust in municipal efficiency rises. Spearheaded by state visionaries, it’s a leap toward AI-empowered administration, with potential to ripple across India’s urban landscapes.

As the model finalizes for review, anticipation builds. Gujarat isn’t just solving a local woe; it’s scripting the future of smart cities.
