Boney Kapoor, a prominent film producer, has revealed an interesting detail about his early dealings with the late actress Sridevi, whom he later married. In a recalled anecdote from a television appearance, Kapoor described his unique method of negotiating Sridevi’s film fees to solidify their professional bond.

Kapoor explained that for the film ‘Joshilaay,’ Sridevi’s mother quoted a fee of INR 10 lakhs. Kapoor, well-informed about Sridevi’s recent professional earnings (her last signed film was for INR 8.5 lakhs), decided to offer INR 11 lakhs. This offer surprised Sridevi’s mother, who reportedly froze for a few moments. Kapoor further agreed to a higher figure for staff expenses, settling at INR 50,000 instead of INR 30,000.

This negotiation strategy was part of Kapoor’s plan to build a successful professional relationship. He went on to ensure Sridevi was signed for other significant films like ‘Chandni’ for INR 15 lakhs and ‘Khuda Gawah’ for INR 25 lakhs, often setting higher future fee expectations. He recalled telling Sridevi’s mother that for the next film, her price would be INR 25 lakhs, which materialized in ‘Khuda Gawah.’

Sridevi remains an enduring icon of Indian cinema, remembered for her immense talent and screen presence. Her untimely demise in 2018 at the age of 54 in Dubai, following an accidental drowning, was a moment of national mourning. Her legacy continues to inspire generations of actors and filmmakers.
