IAEA Report: Iran’s Uranium Enrichment Raises Proliferation Concerns

An IAEA report suggests that Iran’s nuclear program was close to weaponization before the recent events. The report states that Iran significantly increased its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. The IAEA reported that on June 13, Iran had 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60%. This represents an increase of 32.3 kilograms from May. Because 90% enrichment is required for weapons, 60% enrichment is a crucial stage. The IAEA’s findings are based on data provided by Iran, inspections carried out between May 17 and June 12, and assessments based on previous activities. The report also mentions that full inspections at impacted nuclear sites have not resumed since the June bombings. The Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, supported by Russian technical assistance, was the only site inspected post-conflict. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi has emphasized that the necessary technical frameworks must be immediately put in place for the complete resumption of inspections. He stated that Iran’s cessation of cooperation is a serious concern, especially as the IAEA has been unable to conduct independent inspections of this dangerous stockpile for over two months.
