A controversy has erupted around actor Ranveer Singh after he mimicked a sacred Daiva ritual featured in the film ‘Kantara Chapter 1’ during a recent IFFI event. His reenactment of Rishab Shetty’s portrayal of Chavundi Daiva has led to a legal complaint filed by an advocate alleging insensitivity and offense towards the Tulu community and Hindu traditions. The complaint, lodged with the police and invoking sections of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita, claims Singh’s actions were illegal and disrespectful, particularly concerning the Ullalthi Daiva. Singh had previously apologized for any hurt sentiments, explaining his gesture was meant as a tribute to Shetty’s performance. He underscored his respect for all cultural and religious practices in India. The ‘Kantara’ films have brought global attention to Daiva worship, a significant and ancient spiritual practice integral to the heritage of Karnataka’s Tulunadu region, involving ceremonial dances and invocations to divine spirits.
