Anurag Gupta is a 1990 batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer. Notification of his appointment as regular Director General of Police has also been issued. Anurag Gupta is posted as CID DG. He also has additional charge of DG of ACB. Nothing has been said in the notification about both these posts.
Anurag Gupta was promoted in DG rank in 2022
Anurag Gupta was promoted in the rank of Director General of Police (DG) in the year 2022. After the promotion, Anurag Gupta DG training was made. On 26 July 2024, the Jharkhand government appointed him in charge of Jharkhand. He was removed from this post before the assembly elections. Then in November 2024, he was again made the DGP of Jharkhand. Now the government has regularized his appointment.
What is in the notification of the Government of Jharkhand?
The notification issued by the Jharkhand government to make Anurag Gupta a regular DGP, there is no mention of when his term will start. It is only written in this notification that the tenure of Anurag Gupta will be in line with Rule 10 (1) of ‘Director General and Inspector General of Police, Jharkhand (Inspector General of Police, Jharkhand), Jharkhand (Police Force). According to the rules, the term of DGP will be 2 years.
How long will Anurag Gupta’s tenure be done?
If his appointment is considered effective from 26 July 2024, then Anurag Gupta’s term will be till 26 July 2026. If the re -appointment on 28 November 2024 is considered effective, then their term will be till 28 November 2026.

Election Commission removed Anurag Gupta from the post of DGP
For the first time on 26 July 2024, the Jharkhand government appointed Anurag Gupta as DGP in charge of Jharkhand. However, during the Jharkhand Assembly Elections 2024, the Election Commission of India (ECI) directed him to remove him from the post of DGP. After the election, Hemant Soren government returned to power, then on 28 November 2024, Anurag Gupta was again appointed as DGP.
Government of Jharkhand had to make new rules
After the dispute between the Public Service Commission (UPSC) and the Jharkhand government on the DGP panel, the government also made the appointment of DGP in Jharkhand on the lines of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. After the consent of the cabinet, the committee headed by a retired judge recommended to make Anurag Gupta a regular DGP on the basis of the resolution issued to the rules. On the basis of this, the Jharkhand government has issued this notification.
