Following India’s loss to England in the first Test at Headingley, cricket analysts are proposing significant alterations to the Indian team’s composition for the second match. The defeat was attributed to weak bowling and fielding. Head coach Gautam Gambhir defended the bowlers, pointing out the lack of experience among most, except Bumrah and Siraj, and expressing optimism about their future performance.

Gambhir also backed Shardul Thakur, whose bowling was not extensively utilized in the match. Shardul, who was playing his first Test since December 2023, didn’t bowl much and had a poor batting performance. Concerns were raised about his selection over a specialist bowler, despite taking two wickets on the final day. His bowling lacked the required precision, failing to challenge the English batsmen.

Dilip Vengsarkar, a former Indian captain, advised that Kuldeep Yadav should be included in the team, possibly at the expense of Shardul Thakur or Prasidh Krishna. Sanjay Manjrekar supported this view, suggesting Kuldeep should replace Shardul. He believes that India must make this change, possibly reducing the number of fast bowlers to bring in Kuldeep. After the game, Gambhir defended the captain’s decisions regarding Shardul, highlighting Jadeja’s role in controlling the run rate, which enabled the use of three fast bowlers. He explained that the captain’s decisions are strategic, based on pitch conditions and tactical considerations.
