India’s military capabilities are receiving a substantial upgrade with the US approval of a USD 93 million defense package. This acquisition includes advanced Javelin anti-tank missiles and Excalibur precision-guided artillery rounds, significantly enhancing the Indian Army’s offensive and defensive firepower.

The US Defense Security Cooperation Agency has sanctioned the sale of the FGM-148 Javelin anti-tank missile system for USD 45.7 million. This highly effective “fire-and-forget” system, comprising 100 missiles and 25 launch units, enables soldiers to engage armored threats at ranges over two kilometers. The missile’s autonomous guidance allows the operator to seek cover immediately after firing, enhancing survivability.

Additionally, India will procure up to 216 M982A1 Excalibur precision-guided artillery rounds valued at USD 47.1 million. These GPS-guided munitions provide exceptional accuracy, allowing for precise strikes on targets from significant distances, effectively transforming India’s artillery into a precision strike force.

The Javelin’s unique infrared guidance system allows it to lock onto targets and pursue them independently, even from behind cover, offering a significant tactical advantage. Its top-attack capability targets the weakest armor on enemy vehicles, making it a potent counter to modern tanks. It is also effective against various hardened and concealed targets.

These acquisitions are framed as crucial for strengthening India’s defense against emerging threats and deepening the strategic partnership with the United States. The deals will replenish existing Javelin stocks and expand the operational scope for both systems, while also improving joint operational capabilities. This strategic enhancement signals a new era of precision warfare for the Indian Army, bolstering its regional deterrence posture.
