India Condemns Swiss Remarks at UN Human Rights Council

At the 60th session of the United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC), Indian diplomat Kshitij Tyagi delivered a sharp rebuke to Switzerland over its comments regarding India, labeling them as “astonishing, superficial, and ignorant.” Tyagi stated that it was particularly important for Switzerland, in its role as chair of the UNHRC, to avoid wasting the council’s time on what India views as inaccurate and unfair statements. He suggested that Switzerland should instead focus on its own domestic challenges, including “racism, systemic discrimination, and xenophobia.” Tyagi highlighted India’s democratic credentials, emphasizing its status as the world’s largest, most diverse, and vibrant democracy, which culturally embraces pluralism. He affirmed India’s readiness to help Switzerland address its concerns. Tyagi’s remarks reinforced India’s position that discussions within the UN Human Rights Council should be based on facts rather than “false narratives.” He also stressed that India expects its allies to respect the council’s integrity and refrain from engaging in unsubstantiated claims. The Indian response came in reaction to Switzerland’s call at the UN for India to take effective steps to protect minorities and uphold the rights to freedom of expression and media freedom.
