India is undertaking an unprecedented infrastructure overhaul in the Himalayas to bolster its defenses against China, a direct response to the strategic vulnerabilities exposed by the 2020 Galwan Valley clash. This major build-up involves the rapid construction of roads, tunnels, bridges, and airfields in treacherous, high-altitude terrain. The goal is to drastically improve the speed of troop deployment and the reliability of supply lines along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The Border Roads Organisation (BRO) is central to this effort, with its budget significantly increased to manage numerous projects, including the vital Zoji La tunnel and the strategically located Nyoma airbase. This multi-pronged approach signifies a determined effort to ensure military readiness and a strong deterrent posture. By overcoming geographical challenges, India aims to ensure it is never again outmaneuvered due to poor connectivity in this critical border region.
