Malé hosted the 60th Independence Day celebrations of the Maldives, which Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended as the Guest of Honour. The event took place at Republic Square and was attended by President Mohamed Muizzu.
Prime Minister Modi also met with a range of political leaders in the Maldives, including Vice President Hussain Mohammed Latheef, Parliament Speaker Abdul Rahim Abdullah, and former President Mohammed Nasheed. Modi emphasized the strong partnership between India and the Maldives, built on mutual respect, shared values, and a history of cultural and economic exchange. He highlighted the growth of the relationship, supported by people-to-people connections and cooperation in various fields, and reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting the Maldivian people and global progress.
The Official Spokesperson of the Ministry of External Affairs, Randhir Jaiswal, stated that both nations reaffirmed their commitment to a stronger India-Maldives relationship. The Maldives President’s Office mentioned a courtesy call between Vice President Latheef and PM Modi, with discussions about strengthening bilateral cooperation. In addition, PM Modi welcomed the India-Maldives Parliamentary Friendship Group, underscoring the significance of the ‘Neighbourhood First’ policy.
