In a boost to South-South cooperation, Uruguay’s ambassador to India has celebrated New Delhi’s decision to establish an embassy in Montevideo. Alberto Antonio Guani Amrilla termed Prime Minister Narendra Modi a ‘highly influential’ figure steering Global South priorities onto the world stage.

The envoy’s enthusiasm stems from a relationship rooted in 1960, now evolving rapidly. With the embassy opening targeted for late this year—possibly June—and potential visits from key Indian dignitaries, bilateral engagement is accelerating.

Interview insights revealed plans to simplify visas for Indian travelers, a topic for upcoming consultations. Uruguay’s diplomatic footprint in India is robust, complemented by India’s concurrent accreditation from Argentina.

Addressing India’s push for UNSC permanency, Amrilla affirmed Uruguay’s support sans veto expansion. ‘We back India’s goals fully but oppose more vetoes in the UN,’ he asserted.

This diplomatic push arrives amid growing trade interests in dairy, soybeans, IT services, and renewables. Amrilla’s comments paint a picture of mutual respect and ambition, positioning India and Uruguay as key partners in fostering equitable global governance and economic resilience.
