Diplomatic corridors in New Delhi buzzed with activity as Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat and vice-president, arrived Saturday for her first-ever official sojourn to India. The Ministry of External Affairs views this as a strategic opportunity to elevate the India-EU partnership, building on a series of high-level interactions.

Randhir Jaiswal, MEA spokesperson, broke the news on X, calling it a pivotal moment. ‘Warm welcome to EU HRVP Kaja Kallas on her maiden official visit to India in her role as EU High Representative/Vice-President,’ he wrote. ‘This timely visit will reinforce our strategic ties and sustain the pace of high-level dialogues.’

It builds on EAM S. Jaishankar’s Thursday huddle with EU ambassadors, which tackled the precarious global environment characterized by constant upheaval. ‘Discussed today’s world with EU envoys – where ups and downs are the norm,’ Jaishankar posted on X afterward.

The minister urged closer India-EU teamwork to foster stability, highlighting supply chain cooperation as key to economic resilience. Such alliances, he argued, are vital in an era of flux.

The visit sets the tone ahead of Republic Day honors for European Council chief Antonio Costa and Commission president Ursula von der Leyen on January 26, invited by PM Modi. Their itinerary includes co-presiding over the 16th India-EU Summit on January 27, a platform poised to unlock new potentials in defense, technology, and climate action. As India positions itself as a global stabilizer, these engagements reaffirm mutual commitments to a rules-based order.
