India Welcomes Trump-Putin Talks in Alaska, Hopes for Ukraine Peace

India has responded positively to the planned meeting between former US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, scheduled for August 15th, with the aim of resolving the conflict in Ukraine. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement welcoming the meeting between the US and Russia. This statement also referenced Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s stance, highlighting that the present time is not conducive to war. This meeting marks Putin’s first visit to the US since 2015. President Trump announced the meeting via Truth Social. The Kremlin revealed that the talks will concentrate on finding long-term peaceful solutions to the Ukrainian crisis, with Russia committing to an active role in the process. During the signing of the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace agreement at the White House, Trump suggested the possibility of a land exchange within any future agreement. Conversely, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has made it clear that Ukraine will not cede its territory. Additionally, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, met with Putin in Moscow, with the US assessing the meeting as highly productive. The situation also led to a 25 percent tariff being imposed on Russian oil imports for India by Trump.
