Ahead of the Diwali festivities, Delhi has escalated its response to rising air pollution by implementing Stage II of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP). The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) made the decision as the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) neared the ‘very poor’ mark.
The CAQM observed a significant rise in Delhi’s AQI, reaching 302 by 7:00 PM on Monday. Coupled with predictions of further deterioration from meteorological agencies, the Sub-Committee deemed it necessary to invoke all Stage II actions across the entire NCR, effective immediately. This adds to the already enforced Stage I measures.
The capital has experienced six consecutive days of ‘poor’ air quality. Sunday’s AQI of 296 was a stark increase compared to the readings of 268 on Saturday and even lower figures earlier in the week.
Surrounding urban areas are also facing significant air quality challenges. Noida and Ghaziabad have fallen into the ‘very poor’ category, while Faridabad is currently experiencing ‘moderate’ air quality.
Despite the serious air pollution situation, the limited use of green firecrackers has been allowed on a trial basis. This decision has ignited debate and concern about its potential to exacerbate air quality issues during the upcoming festive period.
