The Assam political arena erupted with news of Bhupen Bora’s formal entry into the BJP on Sunday, a defection from Congress that could redefine the upcoming assembly election dynamics. The former state Congress president cited irreconcilable differences over national honor as his reason for the switch.
The induction ceremony in Guwahati was graced by BJP state president Dilip Saikia and minister Jayanta Mallabarua, along with a host of leaders. It symbolized BJP’s aggressive expansion strategy ahead of the polls.
Addressing the media, Bora lambasted Congress for straying from its ethos and wounding India’s pride. ‘For 32 years, I toiled for Congress with unwavering commitment—these very clothes are witness to my sacrifices alongside Rahul Gandhi,’ he said poignantly. He accused the party of capitulating on matters of national prestige.
Bora stressed that his departure was the result of careful deliberation, not haste. ‘Congress no longer mirrors the people’s dreams or upholds its ideological core,’ he asserted, justifying his new allegiance.
Saikia lauded Bora’s vast experience, stating, ‘His expertise in organization will fortify BJP in Assam, propelling our mission of inclusive development and strong governance.’
Mallabarua framed the move as a vote of confidence in BJP’s direction. ‘A surge of leaders is embracing us, drawn by PM Modi’s blueprint for progress and CM Sarma’s exemplary administration,’ he observed.
This high-stakes switch arrives at a critical juncture, with Bora’s influence likely to impact voter sentiment in Assam’s diverse regions. It reflects broader trends of opposition erosion and BJP consolidation, setting the stage for a fiercely contested election.
