Kolkata, May 17. Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the senior Congress leader, has formally requested West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to address the confusion caused by the state’s latest animal slaughter guidelines. The May 13 public notice has led to significant unrest in Murshidabad, where residents fear restrictions on their traditional practices.

According to the notice, certificates must be obtained before slaughtering bulls, calves, cows, and buffaloes. Public slaughter is prohibited, and officials are empowered to monitor compliance. Chowdhury highlighted that such rules have created apprehension among minority communities who rely on these customs for religious observances.

In his letter, he urged the government to identify dedicated spaces for these rituals so that people can continue their practices without disruption. He stressed that clear demarcation of such sites would reduce anxiety and promote harmony in the district.

Chowdhury’s appeal underlines the broader challenge of balancing regulatory oversight with respect for cultural diversity. His call for intervention comes at a time when political sensitivities around minority rights and religious freedoms are running high in West Bengal.
