Raxaul-Haldia Corridor: Revolutionizing Trade Between India and Nepal
1 min readThe strategic importance of the Raxaul-Haldia Expressway cannot be overstated, particularly regarding its role in international trade. As a landlocked country, Nepal relies heavily on Indian ports for its global commerce, and the Raxaul border point is the primary gateway for this traffic. By constructing a 600 km high-speed corridor directly from Raxaul to the Haldia port, India is establishing a modern trade artery that will benefit the entire South Asian region. The Rs 40,000 crore investment underscores the massive scale and the federal government’s commitment to improving cross-border logistics.
Technically, the expressway is a greenfield project, meaning it is being constructed on an entirely new alignment to ensure a straighter, faster, and more efficient path. This approach avoids the bottlenecks of existing urban centers and provides a dedicated route for long-haul freight. The National Highways Authority of India is fast-tracking the clearances required for the project, aiming for a full operational status by 2028. Beyond trade, the expressway is expected to spur the growth of new satellite towns and industrial clusters along its length, transforming the socio-economic profile of the districts it traverses in both Bihar and West Bengal.
