Bihar authorities have uncovered a cyber fraud involving SIM boxes, leading to the seizure of four SIM box devices in the Bhojpur district. One suspect, Mukesh Kumar, has been arrested in connection with the case. The Economic Offences Unit (EOU) conducted a raid in Narayanpur village, seizing the SIM boxes along with a laptop, and internet router. Further investigation is underway to identify and apprehend other individuals involved. The primary function of the SIM boxes was to convert international calls into local calls, allowing cybercriminals to perpetrate fraudulent activities. It is believed that thousands of fraudulent calls were made daily, which resulted in significant financial losses for the central telecom ministry. The investigation has also uncovered potential complicity between telecom service providers’ distributors and retailers. They are believed to have facilitated the illicit procurement of SIM cards through the misuse of biometric data. These SIM cards were then employed in the SIM box operation to facilitate fraudulent activities.
