BJP Accuses Congress of Divisive Hijab Politics in Karnataka
2 min readThe Karnataka political arena heated up Wednesday when opposition leader R. Ashok of the BJP launched a blistering broadside against the state Congress government’s decision to lift the 2022 ban on hijabs and select religious symbols in educational settings. What began as a uniform policy has now morphed into a lightning rod for accusations of communal politicking.
Ashok linked the timing directly to the Congress’s humiliation in the Davangere bypoll and simmering minority voter frustration. ‘Frightened by the poll drubbing and community backlash, they’ve revived their toxic strategy of division,’ he alleged.
Amid a litany of state woes—inflation spiraling, corruption festering, farmers in despair, and law enforcement in tatters—Ashok decried the focus on faith-based attire. ‘This is no fight for freedoms; it’s a blatant payoff to appease a disgruntled group,’ he posited.
Central to the assault was the government’s purported disregard for the courts. Referencing the 2022 High Court order mandating dress uniformity, Ashok called the policy reversal a ‘shameful affront’ to judicial authority. ‘Institutions of learning must foster equality and discipline, not become stages for religious assertion,’ echoed the court’s stance in his remarks.
Ashok spotlighted inconsistencies: ‘Liberty for hijabs, but zero tolerance for saffron accessories—this is textbook discriminatory secularism.’
The episode echoes the massive 2022 protests that paralyzed education in Karnataka. Proponents see the new order as progressive, but detractors warn of eroded discipline and heightened tensions. With elections on the horizon, this gambit could either consolidate Congress’s base or boomerang spectacularly, leaving Karnataka’s youth caught in the crossfire of adult power plays.
