The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has provided details regarding the deaths of three Bangladeshi nationals in Tripura, identifying them as armed smugglers who illegally entered Indian territory and attacked local residents. The spokesperson confirmed that the assailants also killed one villager during the violent encounter on October 15, 2025.
The incident unfolded near Bidyabil village, about 3 kilometers inside the Indian border, where the smugglers attempted to steal cattle. Villagers who resisted the theft were brutally attacked with iron dahs and knives, leading to the death of one villager. Indian forces arrived to find two smugglers dead on site, while the third passed away from injuries the next day. The bodies have been handed over to Bangladesh, and a case is registered.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges of cross-border crime and the need for collaborative solutions. The MEA urged Bangladesh to uphold the integrity of the international boundary and support the construction of border fencing to prevent such criminal activities and smuggling.
The Bangladeshi government has formally protested the deaths, terming them ‘brutal’ and a violation of human rights. They have requested a thorough, impartial investigation to ensure justice and prevent future occurrences.
