Bihar Pre-Monsoon Surge: Lightning Alerts and Record Rainfall
1 min readIn a sharp contrast to the heatwaves in the north, Bihar is witnessing an exceptionally active pre-monsoon season. Data from the Patna Meteorological Centre reveals that the state has recorded a staggering 206% more rainfall than average between March and May. This surge in precipitation is attributed to the moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal combined with frequent western disturbances. Regions like Purnia, Araria, and Katihar have emerged as the wettest spots, with Purnia alone recording over 234 mm of rain in this period.
The weather department has now sounded a yellow alert for thunderstorms and lightning across North-East Bihar until May 21. While the rain has kept the extreme heat at bay in several districts, the frequency of lightning strikes (vajrapat) remains a major safety concern for rural populations. Farmers are advised to seek safe shelter during thunderous activity and avoid open fields. While the eastern districts remain wet, western Bihar is experiencing a mix of humidity and rising temperatures, creating a diverse weather map across the state.
