The city of Durg in Chhattisgarh is reeling from a shocking case involving a woman’s own sister, who is accused of kidnapping and selling her 8-month-old nephew. Sukhairin Bai reported that her sister, Sangini, was responsible for the abduction and sale of her baby. The police have responded by arresting five individuals linked to a criminal gang based in Bihar. The arrested include a retired FCI employee, a fake doctor, the woman, her boyfriend, and an accomplice.
The investigation revealed that the retired FCI employee, Gauri Mahto, needed an heir due to family disagreements regarding property inheritance. He approached Dr. Badal (Mithlesh), a doctor lacking proper medical qualifications, to arrange for a child. A deal was struck for ₹7 lakh (approximately $8,400), leading to the planning of the child’s abduction.
The victim told police that her elder sister, Sangini, invited her to Patna in June. Sukhairin was kept in a single room for five days. On July 8, Sangini and her boyfriend dropped Sukhairin at the station and fled with the baby after giving her a ticket. After the train left, Sukhairin realized something was wrong and reported the incident.
Police found that Sangini lured her sister to Patna to carry out the kidnapping. She gave the baby to Pradeep, who gave the baby to the doctor. The doctor sold the baby to Gauri Mahto for ₹7 lakh. The investigation also determined that the doctor was operating a clinic without proper medical accreditation.
Pradeep and Santosh were employed to transport patients from rural regions to the doctor’s clinic, earning commissions in return. Following the unraveling of the network, police arrested Sangini, Santosh Pal, Pradeep Kumar, Dr. Badal, and Gauri Mahto. They were brought to Durg on transit remand and presented in court on Friday, where they were remanded to jail.
