IMD Weather Forecast: Monsoon Advances, Heavy Rain in Multiple States

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released a comprehensive forecast indicating that the South-West monsoon is advancing rapidly across the southern and eastern parts of the country. Over the next few days, the monsoon is expected to cover significant portions of the South-West Arabian Sea, Kerala, and the Bay of Bengal. This advancement is triggering widespread rainfall across the southern states, with Kerala and Lakshadweep expected to witness very heavy downpours until June 8. Local authorities in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Karnataka have been advised to stay vigilant as localized flooding and high winds could disrupt daily life.

In Eastern India, states like Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal are also seeing a change in weather. The IMD has predicted thunderstorms and lightning for these regions through the first week of June. Odisha, in particular, may experience strong surface winds, while the sub-Himalayan regions of West Bengal and Sikkim are at risk of heavy rainfall that could trigger landslides in hilly terrains. This wet spell is expected to bring a sharp decline in temperature across the eastern belt, effectively ending the prolonged dry spell that has affected the region since May. The convergence of moisture-laden winds from the Bay of Bengal is the primary driver behind this sudden increase in convective activity.
