Kolkata residents are shivering through an extraordinary cold wave after two days of rain slashed maximum temperatures by 11°C. IMD predicts the trend holds till Friday, with rains blanketing entire Bengal from northern tips to southern coasts.

Until recently, 30°C+ heat dominated, shattered by Friday-to-Saturday rains that nosedived readings. A piercing chill envelopes Kolkata and south Bengal, defying March calendars.

Metrics from Saturday: Peak at 23.2°C (minus 11°C from norm), trough at 19.2°C (down 4.4°C). The mercury’s freefall prompted swift wardrobe switches citywide.

Culprits include a vast western disturbance from Haryana to Chhattisgarh, surface lows in UP-east MP, and elevated troughs. Bay moisture amplifies the onslaught.

IMD flags 24-hour thunderstorm risks in Jhargram, Midnapores, 24 Parganas duo, Kolkata. Isolated drizzles possible in balance.

Monday: Thunder-rain pockets in Burdwan twins, Birbhum, Murshidabad, Purulia, Jhargram, Bankura, West Midnapore. South Bengal largely dry.

As systems brew, this rain break refreshes parched lands but challenges infrastructure. From rural fields to Kolkata’s alleys, the chill signals dynamic weather ahead—stay prepared.
