Delhi Speaker Demands Beeping Signals for Visually Impaired Safety

Assembly Speaker Vijender Gupta is championing a game-changing reform for Delhi's streets, urging LG Vinai Kumar Saxena via letter to install audible traffic signals. This targets the daily perils faced by visually impaired and aged pedestrians in the chaotic capital.

Drawing on AIIMS data, Gupta underscored that 6 million people here battle vision problems, 1.2-1.8 million severely so, often elders. Visual signals alone fail them, fostering immobility and persistent accident risks at crossings.

The proposal champions sound signals—beeps, ticks, or melodies—as standard, inspired by international leaders. Japan's bird-like melodies, alongside systems in the US, UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, France, Sweden, Brazil, and Australia, exemplify success in pedestrian empowerment.

Beyond tech, this is a moral imperative for dignity and reduced fatalities. It aligns Delhi with global smart city standards, prioritizing all citizens' needs.

Gupta called for urgent review and rollout at prime junctions, envisioning roads where safety is universal. This forward-thinking step could redefine urban accessibility in India’s capital.
