Tragedy struck Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas district when a powerful detonation at a firecracker factory killed two and maimed over a dozen on May 14. The mid-morning blast in Tonk Khurd not only razed sections of the building but also instilled terror among residents, who felt the tremor and saw smoke rising ominously.

Pandemonium ensued as employees dashed out amid flying debris and acrid fumes. Medical teams worked tirelessly, admitting casualties to Dewas District Hospital and transferring critical cases to Indore. With the possibility of more trapped under wreckage, rescue operations persist round-the-clock.

CM Mohan Yadav, visibly moved, labeled the event ‘soul-shattering’ and issued directives for an immediate probe. He tasked Deputy CM Jagdish Devda and key bureaucrats with on-ground coordination. Relief measures include Rs 4 lakh ex-gratia to bereaved families and gratis healthcare for the hurt.

In his poignant message, Yadav sought blessings from Lord Mahakal for the souls at rest, fortitude for grieving relatives, and quick recuperation for patients. The accident spotlights regulatory gaps in explosive-handling factories, where poor ventilation and unauthorized expansions have led to prior disasters. Officials vow a zero-tolerance approach, promising enhanced monitoring and worker training to avert recurrences.
