ED Pressures Bengal DGP: Produce Wanted Cop Shantanu Sinha Biswas Now

The Enforcement Directorate’s crackdown on West Bengal’s murky financial underbelly took a dramatic turn Wednesday, with a direct plea to the state police chief to hand over fugitive Kolkata Deputy Commissioner Shantanu Sinha Biswas. Named in dual money laundering probes, Biswas’s non-compliance has pushed ED to seek his service dossier alongside.

Hailed as a confidante of ex-CM Mamata Banerjee, Biswas ignored several ED notices to report for questioning at the Salt Lake zonal office. His unexplained disappearances baffled even family members.

A lookout notice followed on May 5, coinciding with TMC’s electoral setback, amid fears of him bolting abroad.

This unfolds against ED’s widened investigation into shell company scams ensnaring multiple figures. Raids at Biswas’s residence yielded no trace of him, while Joy Kammadar’s arrest exposed their nexus.

Kammadar stands accused of corrupting police brass, including Biswas, via lavish gifts and perks. The motive? Manipulating law enforcement to register spurious complaints in property battles over premium assets.

Biswas’s police career has been mired in controversy, with accusations from various political quarters painting him as TMC’s uniformed enforcer. ED’s persistence signals zero tolerance for such alleged malfeasance.

State response to this ED missive will test inter-agency dynamics in Bengal. With evidence mounting, Biswas’s days on the run appear numbered, potentially exposing a web of influence peddling that spans politics and policing.
