Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Ligamamada Rabuka made a statement concerning the ongoing dispute over US tariffs on Indian goods, which were set at 50%. He communicated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that although some may be displeased, Modi’s strong personality can manage the ensuing difficult situations. Rabuka made these remarks after delivering a lecture at the Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA), focusing on the ‘Ocean of Peace’ and sharing details of his discussion with PM Modi.
Prime Minister Rabuka’s three-day visit to Delhi was aimed at bolstering relations between Fiji and India in sectors including maritime security, trade, health, digital technology, and capacity building. A plan of action was developed to promote defense ties, and both nations agreed to work together for a peaceful and inclusive Indo-Pacific. PM Modi and Rabuka engaged in talks to widen overall bilateral cooperation.
During a Q&A session following the ICWA lecture, Rabuka was asked about his discussions with other leaders about the ‘Ocean of Peace’. He stated that he hadn’t had a direct conversation with the U.S. President, but he had requested a bilateral meeting with the Russian President and had a meeting with the British Prime Minister. He added that PM Modi echoed the sentiments expressed. Without going into specifics, Rabuka explained that the ongoing situation, and especially recent tariff announcements, were affecting relations with the United States. He expressed to PM Modi that some individuals were not pleased, but his personality was strong enough to manage these uncomfortable circumstances.
