If U’khand govt fails to take motion we’ll protest: Barelvi cleric on Purola incidents

BAREILLY:  Barelvi cleric and head of Ittehad-e-Millat Council (IMC) Maulana Tauqir Raza has stated a protest will probably be launched in Uttarakhand if the state authorities fails to take motion in opposition to these allegedly harassing Muslims residing in Purola for generations.

Communal pressure has been brewing in Purola and another cities of Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand after two males, one in all them Muslim, allegedly tried to abduct a Hindu woman on May 26.

The alleged bid to abduct the woman was foiled by locals.

But after that incident, threatening posters appeared on the shutters of outlets owned by members of the minority neighborhood in Purola asking them to go away the city instantly.

Speaking to the media at his residence right here on Friday night, the cleric stated, “We do not wear bangles. We should not be forced to react. If the Uttarakhand government fails to take any action, we will go there and gherao the government.”

Uttarakhand Waqf Board chairman Shadab Shams, Laksar MLA Mohammad Shahzad and Haj Committee president Khatib Ahmad, amongst others, met Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami at his official residence on Monday and claimed that Muslims residing in Purola for generations had been being “harassed” by anti-social parts and compelled emigrate from the city.

At least 42 outlets belonging to Muslims have reportedly been closed in Purola since May 26.

Posters had been pasted by unidentified individuals on outlets owned by Muslims, asking them to go away the city or put together to face penalties.
