A United Nations report suggesting that Myanmar refugees in India are under ‘severe pressure’ following the Pahalgam terrorist incident has been met with strong condemnation from India. India has labeled the report’s observations as ‘baseless’ and ‘biased.’ MP Dilip Saikia, representing India at the UN General Assembly, expressed strong objections to the report’s findings. He criticized the Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Myanmar for allegedly using a ‘communal lens’ to interpret the Pahalgam attack, despite no Myanmar nationals being involved. Saikia described the report’s analysis as ‘blinkered’ and urged the rapporteur not to rely on ‘unverified and skewed media reports’ that aim to malign India. He highlighted India’s diverse population and commitment to interfaith harmony. Saikia also reaffirmed India’s dedication to supporting a peace process in Myanmar driven by the country’s own people, focusing on dialogue and democratic restoration. The report’s mention of India’s actions regarding Rohingya refugees was also part of the discussion, with India expected to provide its response.
