Indian Navy’s Expansion Plans: Modernization and Enhanced Maritime Presence

The Indian Navy is undergoing a significant expansion and modernization program, aiming to achieve a fleet of 175 ships by 2035. This includes the commissioning of new warships, such as the Himgiri, and the integration of submarines. The Navy plans to add approximately 17 new warships and 9 submarines, with several projects at various stages of approval. Ongoing construction involves 61 warships and submarines, with a focus on indigenous shipbuilding. Major projects include Project 17B for advanced frigates and multi-purpose vessels, Project 75 India (I) for advanced submarines, and Project 75 (Add-on) for additional submarines. Furthermore, the Navy intends to build Next Generation Corvettes. These initiatives represent a substantial investment, totaling over 2.40 lakh crore rupees. The expansion is seen as crucial for maintaining a strong presence in the Indian Ocean and countering the growing naval capabilities of other nations, including China. India is also developing nuclear-powered attack submarines and advanced destroyers, such as those planned under Project 18, to enhance its offensive capabilities. The new submarines will bolster the Navy’s long-range operational capabilities, while the destroyer will be equipped with advanced weaponry and radar systems. This ambitious modernization program underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its maritime interests and projecting power in the region.
