In June, India’s Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections saw a 6.2% rise year-on-year, reaching over ₹1.85 lakh crore, according to the latest data. This represents an increase compared to the ₹1.74 lakh crore collected in June of the previous year. Despite this growth, the June figures were lower than May’s ₹2.01 lakh crore, and the record of ₹2.37 lakh crore from April 2025. Growth was seen across all GST components: Central-GST, State-GST, Integrated-GST, and cess. The domestic GST collections reveal a complex picture, possibly impacted by global uncertainties and consumer sentiment. However, regions like Nagaland, Sikkim, Tripura, Lakshadweep, and Ladakh demonstrated strong growth. Saurabh Agarwal, Tax Partner, EY India, highlighted the positive impact of increased consumer activity and government spending in these areas. India’s GST system achieved a major milestone in the fiscal year 2024-25, with a gross collection of ₹22.08 lakh crore, marking a 9.4% increase. The average monthly GST collection stood at ₹1.84 lakh crore, the highest since the GST launch in 2017. Over the years, GST collections have shown consistent growth, rising from ₹11.37 lakh crore in 2020-21 to ₹20.18 lakh crore in 2023-24. As of April 30, 2025, there are more than 1.51 crore active GST registrations. The recent GST figures reflect a positive trend for India’s economy, supported by solid domestic consumption and robust import activity, while showing resilience amid global challenges. The GST was introduced on July 1, 2017, with provisions for compensating states for revenue losses for five years.
