Jammu Kashmir LG Authorized for Telecom Suspensions

Breaking: Jammu and Kashmir’s LG has been officially vested with telecom regulation powers by the Centre, targeting heightened security amid persistent threats. The empowerment covers interception of signals, suspension of networks, decryption of encrypted messages, and blocking transmissions when public order or national interests are at stake.

Issued via a notification on Thursday, the order invokes constitutional provisions under Article 239 and the Telecom Act 2023’s Section 20(2). The President instructs the LG to discharge these duties under central supervision until revoked.

This is no abstract grant—it’s a frontline tool in J&K’s fight against terrorism. During cordon-and-search operations, snapping telecom links prevents trapped militants from summoning reinforcements or broadcasting security force positions, often tipping the scales in favor of the forces.

Beyond blackouts, the powers enable sophisticated surveillance: tracing calls, decoding plans, and mapping terror hideouts. Such intel has repeatedly thwarted attacks, saving countless lives.

Historically, J&K has witnessed numerous service shutdowns in terror-prone districts like Kupwara or Shopian, a tactic now formalized under LG authority for quicker implementation.

As the region stabilizes post-Article 370 abrogation, these measures reflect a proactive security doctrine. They equip administrators to act decisively, minimizing risks in a landscape scarred by decades of insurgency. Privacy advocates may raise concerns, but the priority remains an ironclad defense against existential threats.
