Dr. Surendra Singh, a physician revered for his unparalleled compassion and affordability in Palamu, has passed away. Known affectionately as the ‘God of the Poor,’ Dr. Singh dedicated his life to making healthcare accessible, charging an astonishingly low fee of ₹5 per consultation. In an era where medical expenses often burden families, his practice was a radical act of kindness, offering a lifeline to those who could not afford conventional treatment. He was a doctor in the truest sense, prioritizing patient well-being over financial gain, eschewing unnecessary investigations, and maintaining an open-door policy 24/7. His practice in Haidernagar for many years saw him treat hundreds daily, with a considerable number receiving free care. He also extended his benevolent services to Ramna and Nagar Untari, consistently upholding his ethical principles. Even after health issues prompted his move to Daltonganj, his commitment remained. Approached by a private hospital, he initially held firm to his ₹5 fee, eventually consenting to ₹50 due to hospital management’s financial constraints, a move that still reflected his core values. Hailing from a modest background, Dr. Singh intimately understood the struggles of the less fortunate, his own educational journey a testament to resilience. His simple way of life and deep regard for personal connections defined him as a man of integrity. His remarkable service and dedication reaffirm the notion that truly compassionate doctors are akin to divine beings on Earth.
