Amidst the backdrop of violent clashes in Leh on September 24th, stemming from protests advocating for Ladakh’s inclusion in the Sixth Schedule and statehood, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Northern Command held discussions with the Lieutenant Governor. The meeting took place to assess the aftermath of the unrest. Lieutenant General Pratik Sharma and Lieutenant Governor K. Gupta discussed the ongoing security concerns in Leh, addressing the implications of the violence. The discussions encompassed the general security environment, upcoming issues in the area, and the necessity for teamwork between the civilian administration and the military to foster peace and security. Preparations and coordination to deal with any unforeseen events were emphasized. The Lieutenant Governor praised the military’s role in defending the borders and safeguarding the public. General Officer Commanding-in-Chief Pratik Sharma reiterated the army’s dedication to the protection and unity of the Union Territory. Also present at the meeting were GOC 14 Corps, Major General Dalbir Singh, MGGGS Northern Command, and Colonel Vikas Vashisht, Deputy Military Advisor to the Northern Army Commander. The violence resulted in four deaths, with 59 people injured, including 22 police officers. Protesters set fire to a BJP office, engaged in stone-pelting, and set a CRPF vehicle on fire. A curfew was implemented to restore order. Sonam Wangchuk, a social activist, was arrested and moved to Jodhpur, Rajasthan, under the National Security Act, on allegations of inciting the youth during the demonstrations. The authorities also suspended internet services in Leh as a preventive measure.
