Madhya Pradesh to Hold Grand Water Conservation Events on Ganga Dussehra

Bhopal, May 21: Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has directed that Ganga Dussehra be celebrated with large-scale water conservation activities across the state. He said the festival commemorating the descent of the Ganga should become a platform for a people’s movement to protect water resources. The Chief Minister stressed that the Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan must involve all sections of society rather than remaining limited to government initiatives. He noted that safeguarding traditional water sources is crucial for future generations. On May 25, impressive programs will be held in rural and urban areas of all districts. Detailed instructions have been sent to district collectors and district panchayat CEOs by the Panchayat and Rural Development Department. The ongoing Jal Ganga Sanvardhan Abhiyan, which started on March 19, will run until June 30, 2026. In-charge ministers will participate in district-level events. The first phase will focus on community-led water conservation works, while the second phase will feature cultural programs based on the Ganga theme. Local MPs, MLAs, and representatives from urban and rural bodies will be invited. Using voluntary labor and machinery, wells, canals, stepwells, and ponds will be cleaned and restored. Recharge pits will be built near closed borewells to improve groundwater levels. Each district has been asked to identify four to five outstanding works that can be presented as national models. Programs will be organized at gram panchayat and urban ward levels, ensuring participation from government staff, industries, social and religious organizations, and women’s self-help groups. District panchayat CEOs will serve as nodal officers in rural areas, while municipal commissioners and urban development project officers will coordinate urban activities.
