SANGLI: A day after 4 sadhus had been thrashed by a mob on suspicion of being baby lifters in Maharashtra’s Sangli district, police on Wednesday registered a case and arrested seven individuals.

The victims of the incident had not registered any police criticism over the incident which came about close to Lawanga village in Jat tehsil on Tuesday.

A video exhibiting a mob assaulting the 4 sadhus or non secular ascetics, belonging to an ‘akhada’ (non secular order) in Uttar Pradesh, had gone viral on social media.

“The sadhus did not file any complaint. But we took cognisance on our own and registered a case against 20 persons. Seven of them were identified and arrested,” stated assistant police inspector Pankaj Pawar of Umadi police station.

The victims had been touring to the temple city of Pandharpur in a car when the incident came about.

“They had lost their way, so they asked a boy for directions near Lawanga village. The boy, who did not know any language other than Kannada, got scared by their appearance and started shouting ‘thief-thief’,” the police official stated.

This led some locals to suspect that they had been a part of prison gangs which abduct kids.

“People from the village gathered there. There was an argument. It escalated quickly and the sadhus were allegedly beaten up with sticks by some villagers,” API Pawar stated.

A police staff reached the spot and located that the victims had been certainly members of an ‘akhada’ in Uttar Pradesh.

“The sadhus did not pursue the matter and left the place. We registered a case of assault and rioting on the basis of the video,” Pawar stated.

Dikshit Gedam, Sangli Superintendent of Police, stated the police later received in contact with the sadhus who had been in good well being and persevering with their journey.
