Major Win for Faith: Karnataka Permits Hijab, Janeu with School Uniforms

Karnataka’s government made headlines by rescinding its February 2022 uniform mandate, now allowing students to don select religious and cultural symbols over standard schoolwear. This progressive step prioritizes harmony in diverse classrooms.

The announcement, weeks after distressing reports of a girl’s janeu being cut and another’s hijab stripped during exams, seeks to end controversies and protect student well-being.

Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa credited CM Siddaramaiah’s directive for honoring all religions. Specific allowances include turbans, janeu, shiv malas, rudraksha, and hijabs—common emblems that won’t disrupt order.

‘Kids belong in school for knowledge, carrying their heritage proudly,’ Bangarappa asserted. The order, under legal citations, cancels prior restrictions and mandates uniform compliance with flexibilities.

All institutions, from government schools to universities, must permit these without denying access to learning spaces. Coercion on symbols is banned; exam-specific codes persist.

Leaders must apply rules equitably, inspired by Basavanna’s teachings on inclusion. Contradictory directives are voided.

Reviewing KV models showed discipline thrives sans prohibitions. The order articulates secularism as equitable treatment, harmonizing discipline, equality, and education rights.

Rolling out instantly across the state, it underscores commitment to non-discriminatory education, fostering a truly inclusive environment for Karnataka’s youth.
