Manipur violence: Tribal-dominated districts in Gujarat observe bandh; AAP, Cong help shutdown

AHMEDABAD: A shutdown was noticed in tribal-dominated areas of Gujarat on Sunday to protest towards the failure of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) authorities in Manipur to manage the ethnic strife there.

Several market locations in Tapi, Valsad, Dahod, Panchmahal, Narmada and Chhota Udepur amongst 14 districts with sizable tribal inhabitants had been abandoned as retailers remained closed and teams of individuals noticed sit-in dharna as a part of the ‘bandh’.

The shutdown name was given by varied tribal organisations and was supported by the opposition Congress, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and Bharatiya Tribal Party (BTP).

Speaking to the media, AAP’s working president and MLA Chaitar Vasava mentioned the violence in Manipur had shaken the complete nation.

“A complete of 52 talukas in 14 Gujarat districts responded to the bandh name and remained closed.

Many individuals, together with these representing farmers, social, spiritual and enterprise organisations, supported the bandh.

We hope the federal government will cease the violence in Manipur,” Vasava mentioned.

More than 160 individuals have misplaced their lives since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur on May 3 when a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ was organised within the hill districts to protest towards the Meitei group’s demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) standing.

The May 4 incident, through which two tribal girls had been paraded bare in Kangpokpi district there, movies of which went viral, has sparked nationwide outrage.
