A game-changing upgrade for Meghalaya’s law enforcers: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Thursday inaugurated 95 state-of-the-art police vehicles, targeting better preparedness and swift action in crises. The Rs 30 crore investment underscores a zero-tolerance approach to security lapses.

The high-profile launch at Shillong’s Police Officers’ Mess in Golf Links was graced by DGP Idashisha Nongrang and key dignitaries. Breaking down the fleet: 20 versatile Maruti Jimnys, 19 robust Tata Truck Troop Carriers, five Mahindra Mini Trucks, 19 buses for 20 personnel, 10 for 24, eight large ones for 36, and eight Tata Yodhas tailored for CID. Funding for 79 vehicles came from the Centre’s police aid program.

Sangma’s speech drove home the point: effective law enforcement requires heavy lifting on the ground, backed by serious funding. Modernization is key, he said, with initiatives like the Police Reserve Fund revamping outdated infrastructure. SP and unit heads now wield more power to fast-track these upgrades.

He revealed plans to onboard over 3,000 new recruits, addressing chronic shortages. Citing the police’s stellar handling of Lapangap tensions in West Jaintia Hills – even as Assam talks simmer – Sangma hailed their professionalism. DGP Nongrang received personal accolades for fostering dedication statewide.

As Meghalaya navigates complex challenges, this fleet positions its police for superior performance, blending technology, manpower, and resolve to safeguard peace and progress.
