An expensive car registered in Dubai is under investigation by the Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) in Kochi following reports of reckless driving and illegal modifications. The vehicle was seen racing in Edappally with a modified exhaust that emitted flames, causing a public outcry and going viral on social media. The MVD is investigating whether the car violates Indian motor vehicle regulations. Authorities are concerned that the car may have unauthorized aftermarket exhaust systems and performance upgrades. These upgrades are illegal under existing High Court rulings. The investigation is also looking into the car’s import status. Even temporary imports of foreign-registered vehicles must meet local traffic and modification regulations. The MVD is checking if the Dubai-plated car had any exemptions or if the modifications were made before or after it entered India. Officials are using surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts to identify the car and its owner. Penalties, including impoundment or fines under the Motor Vehicles Act, could be applied if violations are found. The incident has raised concerns about modified vehicles and street racing in Indian cities. Experts are calling for increased port inspections and better collaboration between traffic departments and customs to prevent illegal imports and dangerous driving.
