A vital diplomatic effort to end Russia’s war in Ukraine is underway, with a senior Ukrainian delegation holding crucial talks with US officials in Florida. The discussions are centered on formulating a plan for a “dignified end” to the conflict. The Ukrainian team, led by Rustem Umerov, met with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Presidential advisor Jaresh Kushner was also present, underscoring the US’s active role in seeking a resolution.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy conveyed optimism about the negotiations, stating that a “dignified end” to the war is within reach due to the “constructive approach” of the United States. He announced on X that the talks, which follow “Geneva points,” are progressing, and the delegation has clear mandates to define the necessary steps for peace.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is working closely with the US to operationalize outcomes from previous meetings, reiterating the nation’s goal of a “dignified peace.”
The talks come at a time of intense fighting, with President Zelenskyy reporting significant Russian aerial attacks. In parallel, Russian President Vladimir Putin had previously indicated that the US’s proposed peace plan could form a basis for agreements, but reiterated his demand for Ukrainian forces to withdraw from annexed regions.
