Samajwadi Party’s Ikra Hasan has ignited debate by demanding that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla provide equal guardianship to the opposition. In a candid conversation, the MP from Uttar Pradesh declared, ‘Our House’s protector must shield everyone, including the opposition.’
She painted a picture of systematic muzzling: opposition speeches curtailed, Leader of Opposition blocked time and again. ‘This role is pivotal—think shadow Prime Minister,’ Hasan explained. ‘The vibrancy of Q&A defines our nation; the Speaker bears responsibility to nurture it. We seek his protection and a fair platform in the House to sustain democracy.’
Focusing on the budget session chaos, Hasan lambasted the government for blocking talks. ‘They fear exposure of wrongs; otherwise, budget debates would proceed. Opposition scrutiny is our right, yet silenced. It’s as if democracy is being strangled.’
Extending her critique to Uttar Pradesh, she highlighted preferential treatment for BJP-connected individuals. ‘VIP perks amid law and order mockery—UP’s people won’t forget. BJP faces reckoning in 2027 polls.’
Hasan’s forthright stance reflects broader opposition grievances, challenging the Speaker to uphold neutrality and revive parliamentary discourse.
