Safety First: Konark Temple Blocks Nata Mandap for Visitors

Visitors to the magnificent Konark Sun Temple in Odisha will no longer have access to the ‘Nata Mandap’, following a directive from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). The decision, which took effect over the weekend, aims to protect the ancient monument and its patrons. Tourists are now barred from climbing onto or touching the intricate stone sculptures of the Nata Mandap. Security personnel have been deployed to enforce this new rule. The ASI stated that the restriction was necessitated by escalating safety issues, including accidents where tourists sustained severe injuries from falls while attempting to capture photographs. Concerns about the physical damage being inflicted on the 13th-century structure by visitors touching and scratching the delicate stonework also contributed to the decision. The Konark Sun Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its unique Kalingan architecture, was constructed around 1250. These measures are crucial for preserving this historical treasure for future generations.
