Former Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satyapal Malik died on Tuesday at Delhi’s Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital following a period of illness. The hospital reported that he passed away at 1:10 pm. The news of his death was also confirmed by his PS, KS Rana. Malik held the position of governor of Jammu and Kashmir from August 2018 to October 2019. His time in office coincided with the revocation of Article 370 on August 5, 2019, the sixth anniversary of which is today. Before his time in J&K, he served as Governor of Goa and Meghalaya, with his tenure ending in October 2022. Malik’s political career began in the 1970s as a socialist. He was elected as an MLA from Baghpat in 1974, representing the Bharatiya Kranti Dal. He also served as general secretary of the Lok Dal and was a representative of Uttar Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha from 1980 to 1989.
