Assam’s Barak Valley is grappling with severe urban flooding after Friday’s intense rainfall swamped Silchar city and Sri Bhumi areas. Officials described the situation as dire, with water overtaking streets and halting all movement in these districts.

Heavy showers pelted Cachar, Sri Bhumi, and Hailakandi, saturating low-lying zones and overwhelming drainage networks. Silchar’s urban core was hit hardest, its roads completely underwater and traffic reduced to a crawl amid epic jams.

In Sri Bhumi, similar scenes unfolded as drain overflows led to widespread inundation. Daily commutes ground to a halt, with schools, markets, and offices bearing the brunt of the weather wrath.

Adding to the gloom, a fatality was reported in Sri Bhumi from an electrocution in floodwaters due to a live wire. Police have cordoned off the site and are investigating the electrocution that claimed the victim’s life.

IMD warns of ongoing rain activity, with clouds poised to dump more over Assam. Guwahati’s regional center highlighted persistent monsoon influences. Rainfall figures from Thursday: Rupnagar topped with 50.5 mm, followed by 21.5 mm in Downtown University vicinity and 19.5 mm at Gauhati University.

Hajo in Kamrup saw 15.5 mm, Sualkuchi 18 mm. Nowcast updates signal very likely moderate rain spells. Barak Valley officials are on standby, focusing on high-risk city zones.

This episode serves as a stark reminder of Assam’s flood vulnerability. Swift relief distribution and preparedness drills are underway, but experts call for robust infrastructure upgrades to shield cities from climate-induced deluges.
