Bolstering its oceanic might, the Indian Navy will induct the stealthy INS Taragiri on April 3 in Visakhapatnam, with Rajnath Singh leading the charge. This Project 17A marvel advances India’s naval self-sufficiency, aligning with the 2047 vision of a completely indigenous fleet.

Armed to the teeth, the frigate deploys BrahMos missiles for supersonic surface assaults, Barak-8 for air superiority, and Varunastra for underwater threats, augmented by rocket launchers and defensive guns. Its sensor fusion—featuring digital radars, sonars, and a central combat suite—delivers real-time threat neutralization from afar. A dual-helicopter hangar extends its reach for ASW and surveillance.

At 6,700 tonnes and 30-knot speeds, Taragiri’s 75% desi tech, including bespoke design from the Navy’s bureau and GRSE construction, showcases supply chain maturity. As the fourth Nilgiri-class ship, it follows the trio commissioned earlier this year, with the rest in trials.

Spanning seven frigates—four from MDL, three from GRSE, launched 2019-2022—the class honors mountain heritage, from Nilgiri to Vindhyagiri. This fleet will supercharge anti-access/area denial strategies, vital amid Indo-Pacific flux.

Taragiri’s arrival not only enhances firepower but inspires industry, fostering jobs and innovation. It cements India’s role as a net security provider, ready to defend sovereignty and allies across vast seas.
